Lecture at the HipHop Ecologies and Politics Symposium in Finland

In October i travelled to Finland to present my new lecture "cypher - space, meaning and movement in Breaking" at the HipHop Ecologies and Politics Symposium at the University of Helsinki and the University of Turku, organised by the research network "HipHop Finland". I reflected on the role of the cypher in urban dance cultures and especially in Breaking, the cultural meaning and the possibilities to use the cypher for teaching dance. Keynote speaker was Jeff Chang and it was great to meet and exchange with him - he is a very well known and respected HipHop researcher and wrote the famous book "Can´t stop, won´t stop".

The symposium was very interesting and combined various subjects in the research of HipHop music and culture in finland and abroad. Next to interesting talks we had a good time at the dinner and in funny named bars like "the bank" or "the school".

Of course i met up with the local Breaking scene and went to practice with BGirl Ramona and BBoy Pluto, and made a sightseeing tour through Turku and Helsinki. It was a great time!

Judge @SM Breaking in Helsingborg

On the weekend of 29 & 30.09.2017 i was invited to judge the Swedisch Championships of Breaking, called SM Breaking, in Helsingborg. I was very happy to go, because next to me, there were good friends of mine invited to judge this event: Lil Zoo (Morocco), Hurricane Ray (Netherlands), Paulina (Poland) and Jurskee (Netherlands) and we had a great time at SM breaking. DJ Smirnoff was the official DJ, and he joined us for the judge demos and made a cool recap of our rounds:
Recap Judgeshowcase @ SM Breaking

The event started on friday with the 1on1, powermove and +35 1on1 battle preselections, and continued on the next day with the crewbattle, kidsbattle and all ko-rounds of all battle categories. It was a lot of work to judge so many categories, but it was great to see some really good and individual dancers participating.
In my free time i got "fika" - coffee and cannebulle (hmmmm!) and had a great exchange with Jurskee on the topic of judging, teaching dance, and the young generation.
On sunday, we had a discussion round on teaching Breaking with Ray, Jurskee and me for the online Swedish Podcast. Ray gave an insight about his danceschool Fresh in Weert, Netherlands. He developed special teaching concepts to build a new generation of bgirls and bboys. Very interesting!

Ladie´s Dance Foundation Camp 2017

Ladies Dance Camp 2017 - foto by Serife Zor
This summer we hold the Ladie´s Dance Camp for advanced female dancers in urban dance/street dance for the second time! It was running from 26.-30.08.2017, and included practical and theoretical lessons in the urban dance styles breaking, house, hiphop, vogueing, whacking, popping and dancehall, a daily jamsession, yoga classes, free meals and side-events like urban dance health - self treatment for dancers, yoga-thai massage and an experimental night. More than 37 participants worked hard with great motivation, teached by 10 professional dance experts. This year i had the job to organise, implement and evaluate the camp. It was hard work but it was a great experience!
You can find more information on the Facebook page of LADIE`S DANCE. The camp was supported by LAG Tanz NRW and Heilandt Kaffeemanufaktur - the best coffee (-;

Lecture & research in Canada

In may/june i travelled to Toronto to present a part of my PhD research at the IASPM Canada 150: Music and Belonging Conference (Schedule: click here), which was connected with the network of POP Moves. The conference took place at the University of Toronto, and i had a scholarship from the German Sport University Cologne to travel there. It was a great experience; i met many scholars doing interesting research in music, dance or hip-hop. There is a lot going on in Canada and USA!

After the conference i met with organisers and dancers from the canadien hip-hop scene to get an insight to structures and dance practice. I had a great time with the girls from the bgirl movement Keep Rocking You, hosted by Dr. Mary Fogarty, bgirl, organizer, and professor in dance and hip-hop at York University. I had the chance to hang out and session with Mary and the bboys from the Albino Zebras, which represent the older generation bboys in Toronto. They throw the most incredible and creative moves you´ve seen!
Next stop was Montreal, were i met up with Roya the Destroya and several local bboys and bgirls like BGirl Lynx from Legendary Crew. If i already represent the "older" generation of BGirls in Germany, well, she is 10 years ahead of me! Lynx is definitely a head of the Montreal scene and a big inspiration!
My travel to Canada was great and gives me a lot of motivation for my academic research, dancing, and community work. I will definitely visit again!
